📖 History of Pratapgad Fort

Pratapgad fort has been built from 1656 to 1657 CE by the directives of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. The construction was under the charge of Moropant Trimbak Pingle, who was an extremely trusted minister in his team. This fort was built to secure important hill routes Connecting coast line of Konkon and in the plateau part of the Deccan. 

This fort by its altitude and geographic position was the most secured Fort among the forts of maratha’s empire. 

But Pratapgad became more famous by the iconic Battle Of Pratapgad where Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in 10th November 1659 has been victorious against the Bijapur’s chief general named as Afzal Khan.

⚔️ Why Was Pratapgad Fort Was Built?

Pratapgad Fort was not built to serve as a royal palace- it was constructed to serve as an formidable military fort.

The primary objectives for its creation included:

Its location allowed soldiers to spot enemy movements from a distance, making surprise attacks almost impossible.

⚔️ Battle of Pratapgad Fort (1659)

Pratapgad Fort witness to one of the most significant events in Indian history.

In 1659, the Bijapur Sultanate sent its mighty general Afzal Khan along with a huge army to secure a victory over Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. An open-field now were used for fighting the battle. However, the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj decided to fight the battle in the dense forests surrounding Pratapgad Fort, within the forest,

A meeting was convened between the two big leaders. Shivaji Maharaj made preparations at his level in the meeting conducted by Afzal Khan, which was aimed at trapping him; therefore Shivaji Maharaj came prepared for treachery in this meeting with Wagh Nakh and the dagger, and was also clad in armor.

The secret Maratha troop suddenly attacked from the hilly places nearby, and Bijapur army was completely defeated. This victory established Shivaji Maharaj as one of India’s greatest military strategists and gave new strength to the Maratha Empire.

🏰 Upper & Lower Fort

The fort has two portions:

The Upper Fort (Balekilla): it is the most secure part of the fort housing all the important structures and viewing points.

The Lower Fort: built for strengthening the perimeter of the fort and housing the soldiers. The two-layer fortress design is believed to be so difficult to capture.

Water was supplied to the soldiers all throughout the year through rock-cut tanks located at various spots inside the fort to be used during prolonged sieges.

Visiting Pratapgad Fort – My Journey This visit was as if i was passing through a living segment of history. It was a nice pleasant trek and the views from the fort were awesome to the fullest with the views of Sahyadri range of mountains. One can comfortably spend long hours here in sheer silence. 

The best part was to stand beside the magnificent statue of Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and imagine history that once came alive at this spot, hundreds of years back .
