History of Sinhagad Fort

Before being known as Sinhagad, the fort was previously named Kondhana Fort and fell into various empires’ hands which included the Yadavs, the Bahamanis, the Mughals and the Marathas, until it rose to fame with the legendary Battle of Sinhagad back in 1670. In those times, Kondhana Fort was under Mughal rule and was a great strategic fort desired by Shivaji’s most capable army chief Tanaji Malusare. At the edge of darkness and deep in enemy territory, Tanaji plotted an incredible plan to attack the fort at night.

According to popular accounts, his soldiers used a trained monitor lizard named Yashwanti to climb the fort’s steep cliffs and launch a swift attack.hal commander Udaybhan Rathod engaged in a fierce swordfight following the courageous and rapid infiltration.

Tanaji died on the battlefield, but fought with remarkable braveness and spirit. Seeing his sacrifice, the Maratha army kept fight and in the end they capture the fort. This battle was another of the historic successes for the Maratha empire.

One of the most touching stories associated with the fort explains how it received its present name.

After learning about Tanaji Malusare’s sacrifice, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj is believed to have said,

“Gad aala, pan Sinha gela.”
 “The fort is won, but the lion is lost.”

The “lion” referred to Tanaji Malusare, whose bravery and loyalty made him unforgettable. This incident made the Kondhana fort known by the name ” Sinhagad” , which means ” The Fort of theLion”.
