Shivneri Fort: The Birthplace Of The Great Warrior

“What if I told you that Shivneri Fort in witnessed the birth of a king who changed the course of Indian history forever?”

A fortress high up above the legendary town of Junnar in Pune district that’s not a simple hill fort. This fort is the holy birthplace of the great Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, the great warriors to the dream of the ‘Swarajya’. Each of its stone, gateways and the pathways echoes with a story of valor.

When I had planned for a trip to the Shivneri, I was really enthusiastic and expected that it would just another old structure. But, soon after I stepped inside the first gate of Shivneri, it was like I was travelling back to times in history. Walking through the aged fort while a cool and fresh breeze came flying through the Sahyadris was amazing and to add more, the experience of standing at the spot where great Shivaji Maharaj was born made me extremely patriotic. Indeed, Shivneri is not just for tourist purpose, it is a great memoir of Maharashtra!

No matter what kind of traveller you are – history buffs, trekking freaks, or a weekend getaway freak, Shivneri Fort must be in your bucket list.

Why Is Shivneri Fort So Special?

While many forts in Maharashtra has a history of grand battles, but there is something that clicks with Shivneri fort in your mind is that it is the place where the story of the great ruler and our hero Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj began and spent his early childhood and groomed.

It was here at this fort on February 19, 1630, that Rajmata Jijabai had conceived Shivaji Maharaj. She brought him up within these walls filling his mind with stories of the Ramayana and Mahabharata-teaching him the qualities of courage, justice, discipline and devotion to his people which would help the ruler build Hindavi Swarajya in the years to come.

Thousands visit the site today to admire the architecture and soak in the ambiance where the great Maratha leader spent his formative years.

History Of Shivneri Fort

One of the most famous Fort of Maharashtra which people remember after hearing names of Shivaji Maharaj. But historical facts say that before Shivaji Maharaj took birth centuries ago, there were many ruler’s in possession over this fort due to its strategically located overlook to the then old trade routes.

Thus, it is historically accepted that it had been under many rulers like Satavahanas, Chalukyas, Rashtrakutas, Yadavas of Devagiri, Bahmani Sultanate, Ahmadnagar Sultanate, till it got occupied by the Maratha ruler.

Recognizing its natural strength, Shahaji Raje Bhosale chose Shivneri as a safe residence for Rajmata Jijabai during a period of political unrest. Surrounded by steep cliffs, protected by strong walls, and supported by reliable water reservoirs, the fort offered excellent security. This decision ultimately made Shivneri one of the most revered historical landmarks in India.

Architecture Of Shivneri Fort

One very interesting aspect of the Shivneri Fort is its military structure. The architecture is in such a smart way that the walls used just a part in defense. Instead, the defenders utilized the contours of the terrain as natural fortification. 

Since the fort is situated atop a steep hillock, approaching is extremely hazardous. 

After ascending it by traversing seven grand gates one reaches at the top of fort. These large gates slow the speed of invaders thus impeding elephant or cavalry attacks directly at the fort. They also utilized this structure to efficiently collect and store rainwater through water tanks. The residents were well-provisioned with water by facilities such as those by the Badami Talav and Ganga-Jamuna water tanks, which collected water year round.

Love rain & lush green terrains? Visit Monsoon( July – September). The fort turns into a green haven with misty mountains, pristine waterfalls and refreshing rains.

❄️ Prefer Comfortable Weather?

Travel in October – February Winter: enjoy crystal clear weather & less crowd Trekking and site seeing can really be very pleasant during the winters as well, the views become impeccable and climate well moderated. You’d not regret travelling during these months as per my opinion, its the best season for people travelling for the purpose of trek, sightseeing & Photography.

You could always plan it for summers but just start the trek during early morning if you don’t love travelling on a heated and sweating surface which turns quite cool and bearable once breeze is up and moving, during noons.

Recommended month of travel October to February is preferable to make for a holistic encounter with the place.
