History of Torana Fort

Torna Fort’s stones carry the legends of bravery, fortitude, and dreams of great men. According to historians the fort was probably constructed during 13th century it later came under the rule of several dynasties including Bahmani and Adil Shahi kingdoms over the passing time. Strategically located in the Sahyadri range.

The fort made history in the year 1646 when 16-year old Shivaji Maharaj conquered it from the Adil Shahi Sultanate. This victory laid the foundation of the Maratha Empire and strengthened his mission and for the mission of achieving Hindavi Swarajya. Following his conquest of this fort, Shivaji Maharaj renamed it Prachandagad’ which translates to “The Massive Fort”, considering its titanic scale and robust natural defence mechanism.

One of the most interesting legends about Torna Fort states that treasure was recovered from within the fort during maintenance work. Legends claim that this treasure helped Shivaji Maharaj strengthen the financial position of his kingdom and support the construction and development of other forts, particularly Rajgad which later became the headquarters of the Maratha kingdom.

👟 Trek Experience

Torna Fort Trek is an epic adventure in the Sahyadri mountain range. You will find majority of the trekkers starting their expedition from Velhe Village, which is the base village situated approximately 50 Km from Pune. The trek is about 4.5 – 5 km one-way, an usually takes 3-4 hours to climb to reach on the top of the fort.

🚪Bini Darwaza

The main historic gate which stands as the entry gate of fort is known as the Bini Darwaza. This immense stone structure provides a view of the unique and strong Maratha military architecture on entering.
