📖 History of Raigad Fort

Rairi Fort, or as we call it today, Raigad, traces its origin to as early as the 11th century. However, its significance truly rose in 1656, when Maratha warrior Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj conquered it from the More dynasty who Ruled the Jawali. Mesmerized by its geography Shivaji Maharaj built his entire Maratha Empire along with its royal palace, courts, adminstrative buildings along with fortifications and water reservoirs and marketplaces within in the fort wall.

On 6th of June 1674, the most significant historical events at this fort took place with the grand coronation of Shivaji Maharaj as the first Chhatrapati of the Maratha Empire. Hindavi Swarajya was thus born, and Raigad was the centre of all political and administrative affairs of Hindavi Swarajya.

After the death of Shivaji Maharaj in 1680 AD, the fort passed into the hands of the Mughals. Even today Raigad “stands as an imposing monument” of courage, wisdom, guidance and the foundation of the independent kingdom of marathas despite the ravages of time.
